Neruda, the Poet
July 12 , 1904 the day in Pablo Neruda was born in Parral , Chile , as Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. When he began to publish poetry in his teens, Neruda chose a new name in order to hide his authorship from his father; he liked "Pablo," and saw the name of Jan Neruda, the 19th century Czech writer, while glancing through a literary journal. Neruda's Memoirs (1977) tell us of a father who warned of his return from the railway yard each evening by blowing his whistle, and who greeted Neruda's first poem, with "Where did you copy this from?" But his stepmother was "the guardian angel of my childhood," and the headmistress of his hometown high school was Gabriela Mistral, Chile 's other Nobel winner ...
In 1971, the Presentation Speech of the Swedish Academy to award the Literature Nobel Prize to Pablo Neruda refers to him as " What Neruda has achieved in his writing is community with existence. This sounds simple, and is perhaps our most difficult problem".

These words in themselves contain the whole expression of Neruda's art and life. There is little doubt that Neruda is among the most enduring voices of this past struggling century, in his own words "the saddest" century. From his romantic "Twenty Love Poems and One Ode of Desperation" to his epic "Canto General" and "The Heights of Macchu Picchu", his works has sold millions of copies and has been translated into many different languages. Poetry has impregnated Chileans style of life through out the years, perhaps due to the temperament of their people but more particularly by the influence of their great poets. |
